Jorbs, I'm really disappointed by your take here. If you entertain the idea that "This Rule is Bullshit" then suddenly, everything (except the weird descriptions of Jessica, and maybe the magnitude of the outburst) makes perfect sense. If a rule is bullshit, then being caught by surprise with "Actually you both match loss because of a technicality" is a MASSIVELY upsetting thing to go through. Feels like you're overly committed to the sanctity of Hasbro's made up game rules and really don't understand the human etiquette side of things. Overall my reaction to the story is "damn, that sucks, why is the rule even like that? Feels badly designed. Sucks that Brad got blindsided by that when he was poised to have a really fun day at an important event to him. I'd have gotten upset too, though maybe not as much. Halfway through the video; when you first posited Emotional Manipulation as a strategy in relation to this IDW rule I thought you were going to take a very different stance: Opponent is doing badly in a match, and wants to spite the other player, they propose some IDW, hoping that their opponent says Yes and then boom, suddenly they have imparted a match loss on their opponent. Given a modicum of effort and pleading ignorance, this could be an effective way for a Bad Faith individual to ruin somebody else's Win. Either way, I think there's a difference between "Lawfully enforcing rules" and "Writing Good Rules". Folks on the Internet may be blaming the judges technically but I think an honest reading of those comments is more like "This rule is Not Good. I'm mad that Bad Rules exist; seeing Bad Rules enforced strictly makes me upset." There are plenty of unethically written laws across the world. Enforcing them efficiently doesn't make them somehow ethical. I get the AntiGambling hypothesis for the IDW, but that basis for this ruling basically says "WoTC wants to protect itself and its game" and doesn't prioritize Player Satisfaction, or Intuitiveness at all. Maybe a better version of this ruling could exist which makes it suck less for players while still not jeopardizing the gambling thing; but I'm not a judge or lawyer so idk.

This was a fun one. Played a randomizer where I got black star at the beginning of the run. I was amazed at how many relics I had by the end of act 3. It is doubly amazing that you can do that on A20 without the advantage of starting the run with a bunch of bonuses. Hope you feel better soon!

Clearly wrong behavior from Brad's side and the language he uses does seem manipulative, but I do feel empathy towards him He clearly cared about this and I know how unjust it feels to be robbed from an opportunity like this. He probably wouldn't have won but still seeing the deck you were playing end up winning just brings out distraught On the other hand, this ruling is clearly silly and too strict. An impulsive "sure whatever" shouldn't automatically get you a match loss. The OPPONENT is the one cheating. Why should he get the match loss too? The judges didn't do anything wrong, sure one may argue they could be more lenient, but they're doing their job. Even though I disagree with this outlook, it's easier to lob the responsibility at the players than to on the spot figure out whether a ruling should be enforced or not, *why* a ruling is there to begin with. (This ruling is, from what I'm seeing, is there to stop bartering or gaming the matching system. What this scenario was was neither. It's still wrong, but I say it's the opponent's fault for suggesting it to begin with) I like giving people the benefit of the doubt and most of the emotional manipulation here seems to be just blurting out how he feels in a way where he feels justified because he WANTS to feel justified, I don't see any ill intent in the emotional manipulation involved save for advocating that the judges should somehow be penalized. That's hogwash In the end, this IS a high end professional level tournament with next to 0 leniency and the judges are basically tasked to handle issues like a computer, he also disrespected them and definitely made the people around him uncomfortable It's just sad to see a ruling like this be enforced like that. It's a bad ruling, a bad rule, and I too would be emotionally devastated because I know I'd feel inclined to say yes for something like that, especially if I didn't know this niche ruling that saying "sure whatever" is grounds to a match loss. I respect judges a lot because it's a huge responsibility that demands a lot of professionalism, and they don't at all deserve this disrespect, but frankly this rule and ruling should definitely be scrutinized I understand his feeling of "not being treated as human" because that's a real issue. The judges may as well have been empathetic but the way they're made to conduct themselves bar them from that and leads to people feeling dehumanized

Oddly, I've ended up invested in this situation despite not being a part of the StS community or particularly a watcher of streams, but rather my entry point was your examination of a recent MtG tournament drama and the emotional manipulation that followed in order to reframe the narrative and garner support. One thing that sticks out to me is the repeated assertion of Jorbs' "arrogance," which to me seems very out of place. It is touched upon elsewhere in the comments, but it seems like an obvious case of people's insecurities coming out, when you say 'I achieved something I'm happy with' and their reaction is 'how dare you place yourself above me?' I make this assumption because I have been that person in the past, feeling resentful of the success of others, something I have strived to change in myself. It pains me to see another content creator capitalising on this completely unjustified resentment and turning into a bizarre factionalism. There's so much to unpack in this video, but generally, I love that even without investment in the community itself, this talk encourages emotional maturity and self-examination, which is always valuable.
